Chapter Sixteen

Despite having a teleportation device and her new blue scooter waiting for her in the entrance tunnel to the Canissphere, Amanda wasn’t allowed to make the trip back to the Academy of Necessary Magic all on her own. Fiona had instructions to accompany her. Judging by the woman’s scowl as they exited the lab and teleported to the Starbucks train station under Denver, Colorado, Amanda was pretty sure the instructions had come from the top.

She wouldn’t do all this because Caniss told her to. Even if the doc said please. Which means Connor Slate probably knows about this whole thing by now too, and now someone has to babysit me like it’s my very first time again.

Once they entered the train car and sat—with the Vespa propped awkwardly between them—Fiona handed over Amanda’s Coalition phone and sniffed. “Taking this wasn’t my idea.”

“Okay…” Amanda took her phone and seriously hoped it wasn’t dead when she tried to turn it on.

Not dead. Just completely turned off and confiscated. Nice touch.

“It was my idea to give it back,” Fiona added. “I know that’s not a real big consolation, but if Melody called all the shots everywhere all the time, you’d never see that thing again.”

“Good thing she doesn’t call all the shots,” Amanda muttered.

“Yeah.” Fiona folded her arms and leaned back against the red velvet cushion of the train cabin’s bench before closing her eyes.

In the ten minutes they had until the train sped off at physics-defying speeds, Amanda found four unread texts and two voicemails on her phone. So she pretended to be completely absorbed by her messages and not feeling the tense, awkward glances Fiona kept shooting her way.

Hey, shifter girl. In case you forgot, it’s your damn birthday! This is the only present you get, so don’t spend it all in one place.
